Tuia Mātauranga GeoTour
The Tuia Mātauranga GeoTour, a modern take on a treasure hunt, encourages fun discovering local history in communities of Aotearoa New Zealand. Isolated for millennia, this country developed into a beautiful archipelago with beaches, rivers and lakes, mountains and plains, unique animals and plants. A land rich in resources. It has a history of exploration, voyaging and migration from the Pacific, Europe and other nations. The interaction between people, and people and the land, have provided a rich history. Come and explore.
Update: we have reduced the number of caches required to earn the Tuia Mātauranga GeoTour commemorative coin – participants now only need to collect 90 codewords from the 100 geocaches available, as outlined in the updated GeoTour Passport.

This is the first GeoTour of this scale in Aotearoa New Zealand and is currently planned to run for one year (from October 2019 until October 2020). Everybody is encouraged to take part in this journey of discovery and to see Aotearoa New Zealand from another perspective.
The map below shows you which badges you can collect in each region, and where you can visit the roadshow to exchange the codewords for a badge (click to enlarge). Those who are able to collect all codes hidden around the country will also be eligible to exchange them for a special GeoTour coin. These are limited edition. Only 200 have been produced, so get started as soon as you can so you don’t miss out!
